INGER/encja In the Garden: Festival Literature As Photosynthesis
We kindly invite you to the fourth edition of the festival “Literature and Photosynthesis” which takes place in the Finnish cottage complex in the Jazdów district of Warsaw. This year our host is the community garden “Motyka i Słońce”.
The leitmotif of this year’s poetry program will be Alphabet by Inger Christensen (translated by Bogusława Sochańska). An important part of the program will also be a spatial installation arranged on the basis of the Danish poet’s poem. “INGER/encja In the Garden” will in a visual and strongly metaphorical way introduce us into thinking, storytelling and acting during the three-week literary camp. On June 27, the official opening of the installation will take place, as well as a meeting with Bogusława Sochańska, nominated for the Gdynia Literary Award for the translation of Alphabet, will be held.
Alphabet by Inger Christensen is a series of poems subordinated to two systems: a string of letters of the alphabet, from “a” to “n”, and a series of numbers constructed in the thirteenth century by the Italian mathematician Leonrad of Pisa, called Fibonacci, in which each subsequent number is the sum of the two preceding it : 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610 etc.
Translating Alphabet into a foreign language is a huge challenge – it is impossible to directly translate all of the nouns used by the author in the poems referring to specific letters of the alphabet. The alphabet as a system would then disappear, the title of the volume would become unintelligible and, most importantly, one of the key thoughts of the creative power of language would not be expressed. That’s why the translator decided to replace some of the words with others: to clearly signal the important formal aspect of the text, not losing the author’s message.
