World Basketry Festival in Nowy Tomysl

World Basketry Festival in Nowy Tomysl The World Basketry Festival took place in Nowy Tomysl from the 29.-31st. August. Representa- tives from all continents participated incl. Den- mark represented by Jette Mellegren and Jan Johansen. The festival was organised by Nowy Tomysl City Council, Nowy Tomysl Cultural Center, Polish Basket Makers' Association. The Danish Cultural Institute wasone of the honorary patrons.

 

Henrik Kaalund's On the Verge - A Trilogy in Silesian Dance Theatre

Henrik Kaalund The performance On the Verge - A Trilogy by the Danish choreographer Henrik Kaalund was presented on the 30th. June within the framework of The International Conference of Modern Dance and Dance Festival organized by Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom. From the 30th. June umtil the 4th. Premiere of The Nightingale based on H.C. Andersen's fairy tale in Teatr Guliwer in Warsaw

On the 7th. June in Teatr Guliwer in Warsaw there was the first-night performance of H.C.Andersen's The Nightingale directed by Ewelina Pietrowiak. Danish Cultural Institute was the Honorary Patron of the premiere.

 

Concert of Danish Classical Songs

On 7. June 2008 in Oranzeria of the Wilanow Palaceb Susanne Bungaard - soprano - and Mette Christensen - piano gave a concert of Danish songs. The concert was a part of the 4th. European Songs' Festival organised by Romuald Traugutt Philharmonic in Warsaw.

 

Nature in Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales

The Bialystok division of The Polish Forest Society invited the director of the Institute and translator of the writer's fairytales, Boguslawa Sochanska, to give a lecture on The nature in Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales. The lecture took place on the 2nd. June in the Regional State Forest Authority in Bialystok.

 

Children's film festival in Warsaw 31.May- 8.June

'Miracle' by Natasha Arthy The thirteen best Danish films for children and teenagers were shown in Muranow Cinema in Warsaw from the 31st. May to the 8th. June LEGO prepared surprises for all the taking part in the morning film-shows on 1. June. A Polish-Danish seminar on films for children and teenagers was organised on the 3rd June. Among the speakers were : Ulrich Breuning from The Danish Film School, Flemming Kaspersen from The Danish Film Institute and Polish filminstructor Andrzej Maleszka. Organisers: Danish Embassy in Warsaw, Danish Cultural Institute, Danish Film Institute and Muranow Cinema in Warsaw.

 

DANISH DAY IN KOSCIAN SPECIAL SCHOOL

Danish Day in Koscian 29. May in Koscian Special School a Danish Day was arranged. Following the project All of Poland Reads to Kids the teachers and pupils approached H.C. Andersen: the fairy-tales were read and the pupils made some of Danish food. The director of the Institute, Boguslawa Sochanska, gave a lecture on the humour in H.C. Andersen's Fairytales and Stories adressed to the teachers from Koscian schools.

VERBA SACRA - H.C. ANDERSEN IN POZNAN PHILHARMONIC

Verba Sacra 26. May in Poznan Philharmonic Marian Opania, an outstanding Polish actor, was reading H. C. Andresen's fairytales and young musicians from Poznan School of Talents were giving a concert of classical music. Boguslawa Sochanska introduced the audience to the religious aspect of H.C. Andersen's work. The concert was a part of Verba Sacra Festival.

RETROSPECTIVE OF JØRGEN LETH'S FILMS ON 5. PLANETE DOC REVIEW

Jørgen Leth 5. edition of Documentary Films' Festival Planete Doc Review was set off on 9. May 2008. During the festival not only could we see over 100 films from all over the world but also a retrospective of 8 films of Danish filmdirector Jørgen Leth: A perfect human, Sunday in Hell, 66 scenes from America, Notes on love, Pelota, Haiti.Untitled, New scenes from America, The 5 obstructions. Professional filmmakers had a chance to take part in master classes run by the filmdirector. The festival ended 18. May.

MEETINGS WITH JANINA KATZ

Janina Katz 'Pucka' On the occassion of launch of Janina Katz's novel Pucka, meetings with the author were held from 9.-16.April in Warsaw, Cracow and Bielsko-Biala. Janina Katz emigrated from Poland after the March '68 events and lives in Copenhagen. She is well-known and multi-awarded Danish writer. Her 11 poetry and 2 short story collections as well as a children's book have been published in Denmark. The author's first book My life as a barbarian was published in Poland in 2006. Janina Katz is also a translator of Polish literature into Danish. Organizers: Danish Cultural Institute, Jacek Santorski & Co., Warsaw Public Library, Center of Jewish Culture, Beskidzka Library.

JENS DAMKJÆR NIELSEN - GRAPHICS

Jens Damkjær Nielsen From 3. - 15. April 2008 a graphics exhibition consisting of works by Jens Damkjær Nielsen was presented in the Cultural Center ZAMEK in Poznan. The artist cultivates mostly black and white linocut. The heritage of nordic tradition as well as the spirit of Edward Munch's graphics can be traced in his works. Jens Nielsen takes inspiration from the local landscape and tradition. Organisers: Cultural Center ZAMEK and The Danish Cultural Institute.

NEW DANISH MUSIC DAYS IN CRACOW ON FESTIVAL 'BRIDGES'

Per Norgaard 5. edition of the festival Bridges in Cracow (8-11. December 2007) presenting the world scene of new music was dedicated Danish music and especially works by two best known living Danish composers: Per Nørgård and Bent Sørensen. Both were guests of the festival. The works by Nørgård and Sørensen as well as other composers were performed by the leading Danish artists: violinist Christine Pryn, cellist Jakob Kullberg and organist Jens Christensen. The Symphonic Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Cracow, the Danish ensemble Contemporanea and the duo Martin Klapper and Olga Magieres also performed. MEETING WITH GRZEGORZ WRÓBLEWSKI

Grzegorz Wróblewski On the 6th of October a meeting with Grzegorz Wróblewski, the author of the drama Den ny koloni (Nowa kolonia) took place at the Institutes new premisses at Piekna Street in Warsaw. The drama was edited in Szczecin at the Forma publishing house under the Institute's patronage.

DANISH THEATRE CARTE BLANCHE PERFORMED DURING 16. CHILDREN'S ART BIENNALE IN POZNAN

The Attic Under the Sky With its play The Attic Under the Sky Carte Blanche theatre from Aalborg performed during this year's Children's Art Biennale. The performances took place in Teatr Animacji on 4. and 5. June, when the Danish artists through music, pantomime and puppets created special atmosphere and let the audience discover mysteries of the attic. The 16. Children's Art Biennale was held from 3. to 6. June, and this year was mostly concentrated on theatre. Organizer: Children's Art Center in Poznan.

FESTIVAL OF DANISH CULTURE JUBII DK!

JUBII DK! On 10-12. May a Danish culture festival JUBII DK! was held at Klub Reduta in Warsaw. The audience had the opportunity to listen about Hans Christian Andersen's life and work, watch films based on the writer's fairy tales and see the exhibition of posters by Finn Nygaard. The main attraction of the project were concerts by the Danish group Tesco Value with its leader Czeslaw Mozil. The main organizer of the festival was Fundacja Fermata. [more]

GRAPHICS EXHIBITION BIN COPENHAGEN

Dariusz Chojnacki  Spheres of Light XVIII From 27. April to 3. June 2007 in the gallery of Danish Graphics Association, Danske Grafikeres Hus in Copenhagen, an international graphics exhibition will take place. Polish artist Dariusz Chojnacki will participate in the exhibition which makes the final part of an international cooperation project that began last year with the graphics exhibition by the Danish Jens Damkjaer Nielsen in the Center of Art and Culture in Kalisz, Poland.

FILM FESTIVAL 'EUROPE IS LAUGHING'

Poster of the film festival 'Europe Is Laughing' From 23. April to 13. May, on the occassion of German EU Council Presidency, film festival Europe is Laughing organized by Goethe Institut was held. The screenings took place in Warsaw (Cinema Silver Screen), Gdansk (Cinema Kameralne) and Lublin (Cinema Chatka Zaka). Danish Italian for Beginners by Lone Scherfig was on the programme.

STIG DALAGER'S 'JOURNEY IN BLUE'

Stig Dalager Journey in Blue Stig Dalager's novel Journey in Blue (Podróz w blekicie) is available in Polish bookstores. The novel is a fictional biography of Hans Christian Andersen, where the author takes the reader on a journey through the mind, body and works of one of the greatest names in world literature. Stig Dalager (b. 1952) is one of Denmark’s most distinguished writers and author of novels, poetry, short stories, plays, tv and film scripts. Many of his books were translated into other languages, including Journey in Blue with its ten foreign translations.

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN PRIZE 2007 FOR BOGUSLAWA SOCHANSKA

Hans Christian Andersen Prize 2007 The author of the latest Polish translation of H.C. Andersen's fairy tales, Boguslawa Sochanska, was awarded The Hans Christian Andersen Prize 2007 on 2. April in Odense. This year's prize went also to the Danish illustrator Ib Spang Olsen and Berliner Märchentag, the institution promoting H.C. Andersen's work in Germany.

'FAIRYTALES AND STORIES' BY H.C. ANDERSEN ANNOUNCED THE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2006

H.C. Andersen 'Fairytales and Stories' The title Book of the Year 2006 was granted by the literary perdiodical "Magazyn Literacki Ksiazki" to the three-volume edition of all 164 of Hans Christian Andersen's stories and fairy tales. The author of the translation made for the first time ever in Poland directly from Danish is Boguslawa Sochanska, the director of the Danish Cultural Institute. The edition, published by Media Rodzina, is illustrated with the writer's paper-cuts. It contains, too, essays and articles by Danish scholars Klaus P. Mortensen and Ejnar Stig Askgaard as well as notes concerning the fairy tales and the translator's essay on the history of the reception of H.C. Andersen's works in Poland. [more]

CONCERTS BY AUREHØJ CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA FROM DENMARK

Aurehøj choir and orchestra From 25. to 29. March, Aurehøj orchestra and choir consisting of 90 young people, gave concerts in the region of Wielkopolska. The concerts were held in Kosciól Pallotynów church and secondary schools in Poznan as well as in the concert hall of Klub Odlewnika in Srem.

EXHIBITION '4DK. THE ARTIST AND THE INDIVIDUAL'

Poster 4DK, proj. Ole Sporring Danish Cultural Institute in cooperation with Galerie Bram and Danish Embassy organised in 2006 a painting exhibition of four leading contemporary Danish artists: Finn Mickelborg, Stig Broegger, Hans Christian Rylander and Ole Sporring. The exhibition 4DK was presented in Wroclaw City Museum (July), the National Museum in Szczecin (August) and from December 7th to January 15th, 2007 in the Aula gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. JANINA KATZ'S 'MY LIFE AS A BARBARIAN'

Janina Katz 'My Life as a Barbarian' Janina Katz's debut book My Life as a Barbarian (published by Jacek Santorski & Co.) being the biography of the author's family, has finally appeared in Poland. In Denmark, the book received the title of the best prose book of the year 1993.
Janina Katz, writer, literary critic and translator into Danish of a.o. Polish poetry by Cz. Milosz, W. Szymborska, Z. Herbert, E. Lipska, T. Rózewicz, and prose by T. Konwicki i S. Mrozek, was born in Krakow and emigrated to Denmark in 1968. Is awarded many prestigeous Danish literary prizes.

WHAT'S GOING ON IN DANISH FILM?

"In Your Hands", dir. Annette K. OlesenThanks to the cooperation with Danish Embassy and the film distribution company Gutek Film, presentations of latest Danish films were held in September 2006 in cinemas 'Muranow' in Warsaw and 'Pod Baranami' in Krakow. The programme included: Strings dir. Anders Roennow Klarlund, The Sun King dir. Tomas Villum Jensen and In Your Hands dir. Annette K. Olesen. Children could watch animated films based on H.C. Andersen's fairy tales: The Tinderbox, Hans the Clopper, The Snow Queen and a Polish film The Flax.

AKTIVT DANSK. GRAMMAR AND WORDLIST FOR BEGINNERS.Lately, the number of Poles learning Danish and living in Denmark has been increasing rapidly. There are now about 15 000 Polish citizens studying at the University of Copenhagen or working IN Denmark as doctors, nurses and craftsmen. The employees of the Danish Cultural Institute, in cooperation with Lise Bostrup from the University of Copenhagen, have prepared a grammar of Danish in Polish, which also includes a dictionary. The grammar book is part of a set alongside a student's book with texts and a CD with dialogues.

ILLUSTRATIONS FOR POLISH EDITIONS OF ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES The exhibition, which the Danish Cultural Institute lends to schools, libraries and other institutions, consists of 23 copies (50x68cm) of illustrations for various Polish editions of The Fairy Tales by such artists as J.M. Szancer, J. Stanny, M. Murawski and many others. The exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Polish embassy in Copenhagen and the Association of Polish Artists, and was presented in Denmark in 2005 .

LECTURES DELIVERED BY THE HEAD OF THE INSTITUTE

A lecture on H.C. Andersen by B. SochanskaIn schools, libraries and culture centres, the head of the Danish Cultural Institute in Poland, who is also the author of the latest translation of Andersen's fairy tales into Polish, has been delivering lectures on Andersen's life and works. The latter, contrary to common beliefs, were not addressed to children only. The lectures' topics may vary and include Denmark's history, Danish literature and culture, the system of public libraries in Denmark and others.

EXHIBITION OF JENS D. NIELSEN'S GRAPHIC ART

grafika Jensa D. Nielsena April 26th til May 16th an exhibition of works by Danish graphic artist Jens D. Nielsen at the Centre for Art and Culture in Kalisz. The exhibition shows black and white lino-prints. The artist's inspiration is urban living - human imprints and rhythms. The series has a coherent theme, but each print has it own existence - a parallel to city life: the unbroken stream of situations, which at first may seem as mirrors of a specific city or the "generic". Exhibition in Herning library The grand celebration of the 200. anniversary of H.C. Andersen's birth took place in Copenhagen on 1. and 2. April 2005. The Embassy of Poland together with the Danish Cultural Institute prepared the exhibition H.C. EXHIBITION ON THE RECEPTION OF H.C. ANDERSEN'S WORK IN POLAND

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN 1805-1875 On 31st March 2006 the exhibition on the reception of Hans Christian Andersen's work in Poland was opened at the Henryk Sienkiewicz Literary Museum in Poznan. The exhibition, which consists of various Polish editions of the fairy tales (from the very first ones to the latest ones), copies of illustrations for various Polish editions as well as H.C. H.C. Andersen in the CastleThe project H.C. Andersen in the Castle arranged together with the Center of Culture Zamek in Poznan on 8-29. December 2005, offically closed the H.C. Andersen Year in Poland. The project contained exhibitions as Hans Christian Andersen 2005, exhibition of illustrations to Polish editions of the writer's fairy tales, H.C. Andersen's paper-cuts, scenographies to theatre spectacles besed on H.C. Andersen and children's art works. COMPETITIONS DURING THE H.C. ANDERSEN YEAR

A work from an art competition During the H.C. Andersen Year schools, libraries and cultural centres all over the country arranged plenty of art, musical and literary competitions related to the writer's work, of which many were patronized by the Danish Cultural Institute. In January 2005, the children's periodical 'Swierszczyk', together with our Institute, announced a nationwide children's literary competition for a new, original fairy tale. [more]

MEETING WITH GRZEGORZ WROBLEWSKI AND LAUNCHING OF HIS LATEST POETRY-BOOK

"Rooms and Gardens"Meeting with Grzegorz Wróblewski and launching of his latest poetry-book "Rooms and Gar" with illustrations by Teodor Bok took place on the 24th February 2005 in the National Library. Both artists are of Polish origin have been living in Denmark for many years. The book has been edited by the National Library and the Danish Cultural Institute.

GNIEZNO ENCOUNTERS WITH THE POSTER. THE 6TH ENCOUNTER: DENMARK

A RETROSPECTIVE OF FILMS BY SOEREN KRAGH-JACOBSEN

Scene from the film "Vil du se min smukke navle?" Soeren Kragh-Jacobsen (b. 1947) belongs to the group of best known contemporary film directors in Denmark. Polish spectators are familiar with such pictures as Mifune, based on DOGMA 95 principles, as well as The Island on Bird Street, a film shooted in Poland telling the story of a boy fighting for life in Warsaw ghetto during the War. FILMS OF DANISH FILMMAKERS, FORMER STUDENTS OF LODZ FILM SCHOOL

Annette Mari OlsenThe cinema "Chalie" organized a showing of films made by Danish film-makers who studied their art in Lodz between 1970 and 1990 - along with films by the women-directors Katia Forbert-Petersen, Annette Mari Olsen, and Kathrine Windfeld. Katia Forbert-Petersen and Annette Mari Olsen met at the Film School with Lodz film-lovers, film-makers, and film students. [more]

MEETINGS WITH WRITER SUZANNE BROEGGER

Suzanne BroeggerThe meetings with the well-known Danish writer, poet, and columnist that were held in Warsaw and Lodz were connected with the promotion of her novel The Jade Cat and the artistic book Hours, designed by Barbara Domagala-Wilson, a Polish painter living in Denmark. The latter work arose from the shared inspiration of the writer's texts and the visions of the painter. A series of paintings by Barbara Domagala-Wilson with the same title is now being presented as part of the program Poles among the Danes. Presence. The novel The Jade Cat was first published in 1997 and is now being published on the Polish market by the Jacek Santorski & Co. Publishing House. The novel poses a literary description of the history of the author's family. The Polish reader may find interesting the fact that the author's great-grandparents - the Jewish Loevin family - came from Torun. [more]

PIOTR TOPPERZER - PHOTOGRAPHY

Fragment of the exhibitionThe exhibition of Piotr Topperzer's photography is connected with our broader program Poles among the Danes. This artist, who hails from Poland, belongs to the elite of Danish advertising photographers. His photos, ones which are associated with the famous Danish design, have also in recent years won the attention of Poland's press. This exhibition also puts on display his second realm of activity, that of artistic portrait photography. His work can be viewed from April 23 to May 15 in the Palac Poznanski. [more]

The exhibition is another presentation of Polish artists living in Denmark. Posters and other graphic design is represented by the artists, who have gained high professional position in Denmark - Lea Boruszek, Peter Gyllan, Remi Mosko, Grazyna Schindler. The exhibition is open from April 23 to May 16 in the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz. [more]

POLES AMONG THE DANES - PAINTING AND INSTALLATIONS

Fragment of the exhibitione exhibition being held this year from April 23 to May 15 in the Palac Poznanskich in Lodz showcases the artistic oeuvre of both Danish artists and a range of Poles who, for a wide variety of promptings, chose to pursue their lives in Denmark. Presenting their paintings are: Barbara Domagala-Wilson, Grazyna Gotz, Beata Teresa Wroblewska, Janusz Tyrpak, and Anna Izabela Zadros Hansen, who in the past was associated with Lodz's Academy of Fine Arts. Also included are their Danish colleagues Anita Viola Nielsen and Jan Wessel. This exhibition also highlights the drawings of Malgorzata Maria Buras and the installations of Marianne Soegaard Soerensen. This exhibition was earlier held at the Culture Center ZAMEK located in Poznan's Castle. [more]

TEODOR BOK - SCULPTURE

Teodor Bok, photo: Piotr TopperzerBorn in 1947 in Szczecin, the artist has lived in Denmark since 1973. From 1969 to 1972 he studied in Warsaw under the sculptor Bronislaw Koniuszy. Later he studied at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen. The exhibition of Teodor Bok's works was presented from April 23 to May 15, 2004 at the Central Museum of the Textile Industry in Lodz and was a part of our project Rendez-vous with Denmark. [more]

FINN NYGAARD - POSTER

Fragment of the exhibitionFinn Nygaard is one of Denmark's most highly renowned graphic artists. His early contact with the creative work of Poland's Waldemar Swierzy and the Polish poster school spawned the main thrust of his interests - i.e., that of poster art. The exhibition of his work that recently opened in cooperation with the Polish National Museum in Poznan was earlier presented as part of our Denmark in the Castle 2003 project. RENDEZ-VOUS WITH DENMARK - Danish Days in Lodz (April 22 - May 16, 2004)

The artist, who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan and in the years 1985-89 was assistant at the academy's Faculty of Sculpture, lives and works in Odense, Denmark. CONCERTS BY THE QUARTET 'NORDLYS'

Nordlys EnsembleThe quartet visited Poland already for a second time and on 10th September represented Denmark during the European Union's Music Festival in The National Philharmony in Warsaw. The day after the quartet perfomed in Skierniewice. [more]

A second edition of the festival of Danish culture Denmark in the Castle, organised by the Institute in cooperation with The Cultural Centre ZAMEK in Poznan, took place from November 18 to December 15. The project was inaugurated by the President of Poznan, Ryszard Grobelny, and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark, Laurids Mikaelsen. The curator, Emilia Wedrowska, is known for dissemination of Polish contemporary art in Denmark. She is the owner of Galerie Brantebjerg in the Northern Sealand, where she presents works of Danish and Polish artists. The artists taking part in the exhibition "Glance" had also exhibited in the gallery. Their works reflect various artistic visions; they constitute a picture of a slice of contemporary artistic life in Denmark. [more]

INAUGURATION OF THE ACTIVITY OF THE DANISH CULTURAL INSTITUTE

InaugurationAt the end of 1999, the decision was taken to move the seat of the Danish Cultural Institute in Poland from Tri-Cities, where the Institute had been established in 1994.
