PROMOTION OF 'POWTORZENIE. PRZEDMOWY' ('REPETITION. INTRODUCTION') BY SØREN KIERKEGAARD
Promotion of "Powtorzenie. Przedmowy" ("Repetition. Introduction") by Søren Kierkegaard, translated and analyzed by Bronislaw Swiderski (Published by WAB). "How to deal with unrequited love and unfulfilled ambitions, not succumbing to bitterness, cynicism or recklessness? How to retain human dignity during severe circumstances? Isn't this a pressing issue worth the translator's hard work?" - that is how the translator starts his introduction.
Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), the Danish philosopher considered the precursor of the existencialism, renowned the world over, was for the first time presented to wide audiences in Poland in 1914 ("Selected works"). It was not however, until 1966 when Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz translated "Bojazn i drzenie" into Polish, and especially when professor Karol Toeplitz published the monography "Kierkegaard", that real interest in the philosopher swelled in Poland, especially among young people. It is even said that Kierkegaard has become fashionable. Polish researchers are also the translators of the philosopher's consecutive works (see the list beneath). The Danish Institute of Culture was a co'organizer of two conferences on Kierkegaard in the previous years: at the Mikolaj Kopernik University in Torun, and in the Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In January 2001, together with the WAB Publishing House, we organized a promotion of the new publication of S. Kierkegaard's "Powtorzenie" in the National Library in Warsaw, in The Baltic Cultural Centre in Gdansk and in KANA theatre in Szczecin, in cooperation with the faculty of philosophy of the Szczecin University. Bronislaw Swiderski, the translator and researcher of Kierkegaard, participated in the meetings. He lives in Copenhagen and works in the Søren Kierkegaard Research Centre (Søren Kierkegaard's Forskningcenter).
