DENMARK IN THE CASTLE 2003: POLES AMONG DANES

Denmark in the Castle - poster With this year's Denmark In The Castle we wanted to ask the Polish artists living in Denmark the question on what kind of challenge it is for an artist to live on emigration, that is for one who has not only grown up with the experience of generations sharing the same fate, mode of thinking and feeling, but who - whether one wants it or not - is determined by this experience in one's artistic work.
The inauguration of Denmark In The Castle 2003 together with openings of the exhibitions took place on 20th November 2003 in the Cultural Center ZAMEK in Poznan.

Several thousand Poles live in Denmark, including ca. three thousand so called 'March '68 emigrants'. Among those, there are suprisingly many active artists who with their significant input enrich the cultural life of Denmark and at the same time introduce their cultural heritage onto the Danish ground. There are also artists like writer and translator Janina Katz, theatre director Wlodzimierz Herman, musicologist Eva Maria Jensen or violinist Wladyslaw Marchwinski, who - consciously - are the ambassadors of Polish culture.
Those are the Polish artists living and working in Denmark whom we will be glad to present during this year's Denmark In The Castle and who, as far as visual arts and music are concerned, make only a representative part. In order to underline to what extent they have become rooted in the cultural life of Denmark, we often present them accompanied by their Danish friends. And one of the reasons for including into the project one of the greatest Danish poster artist Finn Nygaard's exhibition, was his many years' cooperation with Poles in Denmark.
